Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)
special outlets required by National Electric Code for any homes built now in kitchens, bathrooms, garage, unfinished basements and the exterior. The purpose of these outlets is to protect the homeowner from electrocution by water. When any device is plugged into a GFCI and comes in contact with water, the GFCI will trip before you can become shocked. Note- refrigerators/freezers should be plugged to a GFCI protected outlet. The compressor motor will cause the GFCI to trip, shutting off the power to your refrigerator/freezer. The National Electric Code prohibits refrigerators/freezers to be on the same circuit . Please contact a professional electrician to correct this problem if it exists in your home.
GFCI outlets should be tested monthly by pushing test button to see if the unit will trip. If it does not trip or reset, call a professional electrician to diagnosis problem. You may also have gfci protection installed on outlets in an older home by a professional.
